Is Dental Bright just another seaweed powder? Vet reveals

By

Dr Karyn Kanowski, BVSc, MRCVS

These days it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the number of dental powders for dogs.

Some brands are well known, but here’s the truth: once you check the label, most of them are virtually identical.

Nearly all dental powders contain just ONE ingredient

Most dental powders share one common ingredient: Ascophyllum nodosum, a type of cold water seaweed or brown algae.

The seaweed can help improve oral health by altering the composition of saliva to inhibit tartar formation, but when used on its own, there are two main drawbacks:

1) The benefits are quite limited as there is only one mode of action.

2) It contains high levels of iodine, which can be problematic for dogs with thyroid disease.

I wanted something more effective for my dogs

I was looking for something that would do more than just soften tartar. I wanted a product that would do it all:

  • Freshen bad breath

  • Break down plaque AND prevent further tartar build-up

  • Balance the oral microbiome

  • Prevents gum inflammation and periodontal diseases

So I researched different ingredients, compared brands, and eventually came across a formula that was complete, vet-approved, and already hugely successful with thousands of other dog owners.

There’s been a lot of buzz about this new powder

At first, I thought it was just another seaweed powder, but once I had a proper look at the ingredients, I started to see what all the fuss was about.

Dental Bright has a 3-in-1 formula that addresses all aspects of canine dental health.

  • Brown seaweed (Ascophyllum nodosum): Stimulates bioactive saliva and breaks down plaque and tartar build-up.

  • Probiotic Complex (Diamond V®, Lactobacillus helveticus, Enterococcus faecium, Bacillus S.): Proprietary probiotic complex that balances the microbiome and reduces odour- and tartar-causing bacteria.

  • BrightFresh™ (Mentha piperita L., Eucalyptus globulus, Rosmarinus officinalis): A blend of gentle herbs that promotes fresh breath from the inside out.

I kept seeing ads with bold claims about Dental Bright, so I decided to put it to the test.

Is Dental Bright worth it? My honest opinion

I trialed Dental Bright on my dogs

As a vet, I know how important it is to clean your dog’s teeth daily.

As the owner of five dogs, I also know how impractical this often is.

If spending a bit more on a supplement means that I can keep my dog’s teeth healthy and not feel like a terrible dog parent for not brushing their teeth every day, then I am more than happy to invest in a premium product!

In fact, because Dental Bright helps fight dental disease below the gum, as well as above, it is arguably more effective than brushing alone.

I have five dogs of varying breeds, ages, sizes, and preferences, so I wasn’t sure how much effort would be involved in disguising this powder in their food. It turns out, none.

I simply sprinkled it on top of their breakfast and there was no indication that anyone even noticed.

Fresher breath and less tartar after 3 weeks

But after three weeks of using it daily, I definitely noticed a difference! Their breath is fresher, and I can already see a reduction in the tartar that tends to accumulate around the base of the canine teeth and molars.

At the end of the day, the choice is yours. I would certainly argue that using any seaweed-based dental supplement is far better than using none at all, but if you’re looking for one that provides a complete dental care, I can personally recommend Dental Bright.
