How does a chew empty a full gland?

It doesn't empty it. It gets your dog emptying it themselves, which is what should be happening every time they poo. The gland drains through a hole about the width of a pinhole, and three things have to be right for it to clear: thin fluid, an open hole, and a firm poo pressing on it as it passes. An out-of-balance gut breaks all three at once. That's also why the squeeze at the vet only buys you a couple of weeks. It empties the sac, but it doesn't open the hole. How quickly will I see a difference?

It is not a squeeze, so it is not instant. Your dog's gut needs time to settle, and the changes arrive in a fairly predictable order.

Most owners tell us the smell is the first thing to go, often inside the first week or two. Firmer, better-formed poo follows at one to three weeks. The scooting is the slowest to fade, usually somewhere between weeks three and six, because that only stops once the gland is genuinely draining on its own again.

Give it one chew a day, every day, for eight weeks before you judge it. Skipping days is the single most common reason it does not work.

Is this a cure, or do I have to keep giving it?

Honest answer: you keep giving it.

This does not remove the reason your dog's gut went out of balance in the first place, it corrects it and keeps it corrected. One chew a day is what holds it there. Owners find this out for themselves, usually by accident: they run out for a week, the scooting creeps straight back, and they never stop again. How can a chew empty a gland? The only way to clear them is by squeezing.

That is the assumption almost everyone starts with, and it is the reason this problem drags on for years.

Your dog's anal gland is not a bag that fills up. It is a drain, and the hole it drains through is about the width of a pinhole. Three things have to be true for it to clear on its own: the fluid has to be thin enough to pass, the hole has to be open, and the poo has to press on the sac on its way past.

A gut that is out of balance breaks all three at once. It thickens the fluid into a fishy paste. It swells the tissue around the hole until it pinches shut. And it loosens the stool, so nothing presses on the way past.

Squeezing forces the hole open for a moment and empties the sac. It does not fix the swelling that closed it, and it does not thin the paste, which is why a few weeks later you are back. This chew works on all three, from the inside, so the gland goes back to draining itself a little every time your dog goes.

Do the glands need to be emptied at the vet first?

No. Your dog's glands do not need to be emptied first.

If your dog is due a visit anyway or is clearly uncomfortable right now, having them emptied gives your dog immediate relief and there is no reason to skip it. But it is not a prerequisite. Start the chews whenever the tub arrives.

The one exception: if there is an active infection, an abscess, blood, or your dog is in real pain, that is a vet appointment today.

I have tried other anal gland supplements and nothing happened. Why would this be different?

Fair. Here is the mechanical difference:

Almost every product in this category does one of three jobs. Pumpkin and psyllium chews firm the stool, and that is all they do. A plain probiotic works on the fluid, and that is all it does. Why insect protein? Is that not just filler?

It is the opposite of filler. It is the reason this works for dogs that other anal gland chews make worse.

The two biggest brands in this category are built on chicken. Chicken is also one of the most common things dogs react to, and a gut that is reacting is a gut that swells the hole shut. Will it upset my dog's stomach, or make the poo too hard?

For most dogs, no, and firmer poo is the point.

A minority of dogs get looser stools or a bit of gas in the first week or two while the gut adjusts. If that happens, halve the dose for a week, always give it with food, then build back up. That usually settles it. If your dog is prone to a sensitive stomach, start at half a chew from day one.

If loose stools carry on past a couple of weeks, stop and email us. Loose stool works against the glands rather than for them, so there is no sense in pushing through it.

Are there side effects? What if my dog reacts badly?

It is food, not medication, so serious reactions are rare. A small number of dogs do react to something in any supplement, ours included, and when that happens it usually shows up in the first week as an upset stomach, itchy skin, or red ears.

My dog is under 5kg. The chew is too big. Can I break it?

Yes, you can break or crush it. Crush it into food and mix it through, and give the whole daily amount, just spread across the meal so nothing is left in the bowl.

If your dog takes it happily as a treat straight from your hand, that is fine too.

From what age? Can my puppy have it? What about my senior?

From 4 months old.

There is no upper age limit. A good chunk of the dogs on this are 12 and over, and older dogs are exactly the ones you would rather keep out of a vet's back room every six weeks.

My dog is fussy. Will he even eat it?

Some dogs take it straight from your hand. Some do not, and we would rather tell you that up front than have you find out on day two.

The ones that do are usually won over by one of these, which come straight from other owners: crumble it into wet food, press it into a bit of pâté or liver paste, roll it into peanut butter, or break it up and mix it right through the meal.
